Smithsonian’s “Wilderness Forever” Photo Contest

About three years ago the Smithsonian did a Wilderness photography contest. Several of the entries included animal photography or landscapes, but one photo in particular stands out from the group. The piece is simply called "Climbing the Summit Pyramid Of Sahale Mountain, Washington" and it was taken by Ethan Welty.

The photo stands out from the group because despite it being primary landscape, Welty made the artist choice to include a hiker in the photo. This photo stands out due to the vastness of the wilderness almost being compared to the small person in the photo. It is photos like these that make people think of how small we are in relation to the wilderness surrounding us and how much we can learn from the large land around us.
