Extended Outdoor Education; NOLS

Outdoor education has many different parts and levels. NOLS courses are popular courses for individuals with interest in nontraditional education environments. NOLS is a leader in wilderness education and offers programs that can improve backcountry skills but they also offer programs that can help with team building and leadership development. NOLS trips vary in length ranging from a few days to a year. The courses offered generally have some sort of credit that some colleges actually accept as college credit.

On the about page NOLS mission statement is

     "Our mission is to be the leading 

      source and teacher of wilderness 

      skills and leadership that serve 

       people and the environment. Our              community—staff, students, trustees,           and alumni—shares a commitment to            wilderness, education, leadership,

      safety, community, and excellence." 

Their program recognizes the importance and connection between the outdoors and leadership development.

I have never taken a NOLS course mostly due to my summers being spent in New Hampshire. However, after doing research on NOLS and their mission statement,I found myself very intrigued and looking at their courses. Check out what they have to offer!
